The star has handed over the entirety of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize winnings to the trust for venues, which functions to save the Britain's small concert spaces.

Fender was given the cheque on mid-October as his new release the album was chosen as the top album of the previous year.

The musician has decided to hand the money over to the MVT, in recognition of the crucial part small stages fulfilled in his early career.

"As an artist wouldn't be doing this success if it hadn't been for all the gigs I performed around the North East, and further afield, when I was just getting going," stated Sam Fender. "These spaces are legendary, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these locations have shut down – about 16% of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, well-known musicians including the band Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all backed the Music Venues Trust in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by applying a minor surcharge to their admission fees, which supports local stages.

Sam Fender also participated, raising more than £100,000 on his live tour to assist thirty-eight local spots across Britain.

The money supported venues that were confronting imminent closure due to issues caused by floods, fire incidents and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and sound issues.

Some locations obtained monetary aid in upgrading amenities and gear that helped performers and audiences.

"The notion that money from performances in big venues backs the local stages, where it all starts for artists like me, is just logical," the star has stated.

Fender is among several artists to give his award winnings to charitable organizations.

When they received the trophy in the year 1996 for their release Different Class, vocalist the singer declared that the band would donate their cash to the organization War Child.

In 2002, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite divided her award between multiple good causes, such as the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"And I contributed a £1,000 to the center, to their gymnastics class, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they required better apparatus," the artist explained to a publication.

Previously, they contributed their prize money to the local youth club that nurtured their group, as well as other independent music bodies.

Additionally the 1994 recipients the group donated their prize to a charity for MS after a close contact was diagnosed the condition.

"The victory was sufficient," stated artist Heather Small. "The money was the bonus but we didn't require the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our winning affected the lives of others."

Last week, the MVT revealed it had rescued two grassroots venues in that region, by placing them under public stewardship.

The first in the city and the other in Bristol were purchased under the Own Our Venues program, which is supported by the arts council and supporters who purchase "shares" in the properties.
