The speculation about The Game Awards was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The question has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team could be designing a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a announcement clip is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it kicked off the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and deep class systems—qualities that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths you can achieve if you're playing as a distinct build with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously permissive, allowing players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be approached in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, players can anticipate more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
