Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent prize-giving event approaches, there’s always a demand for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
