RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were a great many British personnel on duty over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
